Studies
You may only enter Germany to study if you will be studying at a state or state-recognised university or a comparable educational establishment and you have satisfied the academic requirements for studying in Germany. This is usually checked during the visa process.
For the residence permit to be issued or extended, the following documents usually need to be submitted to the Aliens' Registration Authority:
- current statement of funding
- evidence of adequate health insurance cover for the duration of the study programme in Germany
- current certificate of study The evidence of funding may be produced for example by presenting a savings book or a letter of covenant. If you need to, you can find further information on health insurance cover or the various funding options here.
However, no matter how high the guarantee of your living costs, the residence permit can only be granted for a maximum of two years if all conditions are satisfied. The residence permit also allows you to work part-time. However, such work cannot be used as evidence of funding for your studies.
If you want to switch course or university, please contact the Aliens' Registration Authority beforehand because your residence permit is linked to your course and would prematurely lapse if you prematurely broke off your course. For that reason a check needs to be made before switching course or university.
Your residence permit expires automatically when you have successfully completed your course. For that reason it is crucial that you immediately contact the Aliens' Registration Authority if this happens. You may then be issued with a residence permit valid for 18 months for you to find a job related to your field of studies. During this period you may take on any kind of work.
