Asylum seekers

In order to be recognized as a refugee in Germany because you were persecuted in your home country on grounds of your race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or your political opinion, you will have to apply for asylum at the competent Federal Office for Migration and Refugees. Within the asylum procedures, it will then be examined whether you will be recognized as a person entitled to asylum or as a refugee or whether there are obstacles to deportation regarding your home country and that you may therefore be issued a residence permit.

If the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees approves your application for asylum and determines that you are entitled to asylum or are a recognized refugee or identifies obstacles to deportation regarding your home country, you will receive a corresponding residence permit from the  aliens (registration) authority.

In case your application should be rejected legally binding, your are obliged to leave Germany. There are organizations such as the International Organization for Migration (IOM) which may advice and support you regarding your voluntary return to your home country. This support often includes financial assistance for your start in your home country.
