Employment

Foreign citizens who want to work in Germany can obtain a visa if they can present a firm job offer.

A visa is always required to enter Germany for this purpose. This does not apply if you are exempt from the visa requirement. You can apply for this visa at the German diplomatic mission in your regular country of residence. After applying for the visa, the visa application is sent to the Aliens' Registration Authority for an opinion to be given.

If the intended work requires approval, the Aliens' Registration Authority first sends a query to the Federal Employment Agency. Further, the individual must also demonstrate that he/she can cover the his/her costs of living independently.

If you are issued with a visa once all conditions have been met, you must register with the local residents' registration office immediately on entry. You must then apply for a residence permit from the Aliens' Registration Authority in person. To avoid long waiting times, arrange an appointment with the advisor responsible for you in advance. You will also be told what documents you will need to provide for your matter to be dealt with.

The residence permit may expire if your employment is terminated or otherwise comes to an end. If this happens it is crucial that you contact the Aliens' Registration Authority either beforehand or immediately afterwards. The same also applies if you want to change jobs.
